Singing For Your Life - 2007 December 28, 2007
Posted by onemouthband in : Music, SoVoSo , add a commentJoin me, SoVoSo, and special guests in a 12-hour Circlesong, as we close 2007 with much to remember, and much to look forward to! Sing the Old Year out with us - or just relax and listen to the continuous, spontaneous song of closure and renewal. Sing & meditate, gather & reflect, become inspired by the spirit of peace in music and transformation.
Singers from all over the Bay Area and beyond participate in this revived tradition! Originated by Bobby McFerrin and Voicestra, this popular ritual was held at San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral until 1999. In 2002, Arts First Oakland brought Singing For Your Life to Oakland, where it has taken root as a 12-hour event with an East Bay flavor. Plan to join us at the First Congregational Church at 2501 Harrison Street (at 27th), Oakland, CA. Suggested Donation $10 and up, sliding scale, no-one turned away for lack of funds.

The good news is that the first of the SoVoSo Holiday Seasonings Concerts on December 5th is now sold out. The bad news is that I again did not get quite enough tickets for my friends before this happened. Our 10PM show at Yoshi’s Jazz House will have just as many special guests, including: Joey Blake, Nicolas Bearde, Ashling Cole, Rhiannon, Linda Tillery, PC Muñoz, The Oakland Youth Chorus, Arts First Oakland CircleSingers Choir, Young Performers International, and more. It promises to be an outrageously fun time, so get your ticket if you haven’t yet, because the 10PM show can sell out too!

“SoVoSó is tight, soulful, and a whole lotta fun.”
-Bobby McFerrin
This event is sponsored by Aufdermauer Enterprises and Meyer Sound in conjunction with the Castro Valley Arts Foundation.
SoVoSó is a highly imaginative a cappella ensemble that sings a unique, rhythmic mix of jazz, gospel, world and R&B music, all rendered in their trademark improvisational style.
The SoVoSó repertoire consists of original compositions and other songs that present a global perspective, from Afro-Latin idioms to traditional funk and jazz arrangements. SoVoSó members (Joey Blake, past member, and current member David Worm) are current members of Bobby McFerrin’s a cappella group, Voicestra, performing with him from 1993 to present.
In 1995 Sunshine Becker joined the band; followed by Bryan Dyer, Zoë Ellis and most recently, Sam Rogers. The SoVoSo family of singers will continue to grow as this one of a kind musical project grows and flourishes. A new album is being recorded right now and set for 2008 release on the SoVoSongs independent label.
As SoVoSó (”from the Soul to the Voice to the Song”), the ensemble has continued to pioneer new horizons in contemporary vocal performance, bringing traditional world rhythms into the 21st century. According to the San Jose Mercury News, “The extraordinary richness and brilliance of this virtuoso vocalism lifts you into a special realm.”For more information about booking SoVoSo, or to set up interviews, please contact Lisa Bautista of JFM Presents…. 510.967.1109 or jfmpresents@gmail.com
