Tomorrow I am Burning Man Bound August 26, 2007

I am so stoked! Yes, this year I am returning to the burning of the man in the middle of the temporary city of Black Rock, Nevada! Unlike last year’s last minute, throw-everything-in-the-car-and-pray, three-day trip, this time I’ve had a chance to plan. I plan to spend all my time making music, naturally.
- Acapplaya (”playa” is what they call the desert out there) is a killer a cappella group formed just for Burning Man by Bonnie Doyle of RoShamBo, and I’m thrilled to be singing with them. (Center Camp on Wednesday at 12:30 PM kicks off our performance schedule)
- Then there’s Madi’s Soul Singers (AKA The Playa Kwaya), which is THE gospel happening and non-denominational spiritual celebration on Sunday at 10:30 AM, so I’ll be singing with them.
- Percussion jams break out all over the place and I’m coming prepared.
- TaKeTiNa? Sure, I’ll be doing that too with one or more of my three fellow students out there! Not so sure about where and when, but it’s probably better that way.
- What about The One Mouth Band? Well, it just so happens I’ve rigged myself up as a mobile sound system, complete with looping capabilities, so I can wander around and proselytize 100% Organic Human Music all I want.
- And then there’s the beautiful mysteries and surprises that await. Last year Acapplaya, Soul Singers, all-night Jazz Camp jams, and One Mouth Band center camp open mic features were all surprises. I can hardly wait to see what’s in store this time!
I’ll be camped near 8 and Coral at Acapplaya Camp for anyone who wants to come visit! Yippee!
Where Am I Now: The Cotati Accordian Festival August 25, 2007

The last weekend in August, every year for the last 8 years, I have visted and thoroughly enjoyed the Cotati Accordion Festival. At first it was just to humor my girlfriend (now in her 12th year there, and playing on the main stage tomorrow), but it has grown on me.
“Accordion” is misleading, it’s really a world music festival. The variety that graces the stage over the weekend is always pleasantly astounding. From Zydeco button-boxes to Argentinian bandaneons to sailor’s concertinas to standard piano accordians and back again, accordions of some sort can be found nearly anywhere on the globe. In just one day of the weekend you can hear rowdy Russian polkas, forlorn French waltzes, yodeling cowboy comedians, careening cumbias, fantastic forros, jazz from cool to hot, and covers of all manner of music never created with accordions in mind.
Then there’s the surprises and routinely odd perks of this small-town gathering that draws way more out-of-towners than locals. The Lady-of-Spain-a-Ring where white doves are released daily on cue, The Great Morgani’s appearances which must be seen to be believed, the polka tent, the jam tent, the world’s only life-size bronze statue of an accordion player. Quit thinking you know what this must be like and just show up and enjoy it! Same time next year?

Yes, that was me on NowLive.com a few weeks ago. My old buddy Ryan McDonald is one of the Supremely Important Beings down there, and since we just missed each other at the San Diego ComicCon, I decided to drop by the studio. He put me on air, we had plenty of fun.
NowLive.com has a really cool “social broadcasting” model going on there that lets you basically host an internet radio show from your cellphone and archive it as a podcast. Because they’re still in Beta, it’s all free! Because I was just a part of a larger show, I edited it down and posted the 50-minutes of good stuff here. Check it out!

Ex-words August 7, 2007
Posted by onemouthband in : Notes to Self, Productivity, Recommendations , add a commentAs I’ve posted about previously, Tim Ferriss and his book The 4-Hour Workweek have helped me make some major shifts in my life. In an recent post on his blog, Tim suggested removing ten ambiguous words from your vocabulary. I couldn’t agree more, and I’ve added two more that bug me but wind up in my communications anyway.
1. Happiness
2. Success
3. Should
4. Responsible
5. Realistic
6. Reasonable
7. Spiritual
8. Good/Right
9. Bad/Wrong
10. Moral
11. Nice
12. Cool
Anyone finding the above words in communications from me from this date forward are hereby granted one (1) free meal. Please note that this is only granted to the first person who finds the word and lets me know. I tried to go so far as to remove them from my spellchecker, but found that it’s not possible on Mac OS 10.4 (anyone care to prove me wrong?).
